Acupuncture is generally believed to have its roots in China some 2,000 years ago. Since then, many styles have developed and refined, including those known as TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) and 5 element acupncture, which are employed by bigroom practitioners. Both these styles are based on traditional principles, which describe health and illness in terms of qi (pronounced 'chee'). Qi roughly translates as 'vital energy', and illness and pain are seen to develop when qi is out of balance or not flowing freely. By asking questions, feeling your pulse and looking at your tongue, bigroom practitioners make an assessment of your body's qi, and aim to correct any imbalances with the use of acupuncture and related techniques. We aim to treat the body and mind holistically, as the two are seen as interdependent in Chinese medicine. Therefore, we don't concentrate solely on your Western medical diagnosis, but aim to restore equilibrium to your whole system. Every patient is seen as unique, so two people with the same Western diagnosis may well be treated quite differently.
There is a growing body of clinical research showing that traditional acupuncture can be helpful for many common health problems - see our research page for more information. Please don't hesitate to contact us or come to see us in Bristol or Oxford to discuss whether acupuncture may be helpful for you.
The safety of acupuncture has been demonstrated by two large, well designed surveys published in the British Medical Journal in 2001 (1, 2). They concluded that the risk of serious adverse reaction to acupuncture is less than 1 in 10,000 (much less than many medical treatments). Only a small number of minor and short-term side effects such as dizziness and bruising were recorded.
At bigroom, you can be sure all practitioners are fully trained and adhere to strict codes of safe practice and professional conduct.
